A Little History
Eastside was founded in 1997 in response to a call for help from the community during a major transitional process that occurred on the eastside of Norfolk, VA. During that time, several low-income housing communities faced wide scale relocation and required assistance with the service needs typically associated with such a process. Several of the leaders of Second Calvary Baptist Church, under the visionary leadership of Rev. Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns, decided that a separate non-faith based, nonprofit organization was needed in order to adequately respond to the community’s needs. Thus, Eastside was born. Our first set of programs included job skills development services to the residents of Roberts Village, what is now called Broad Creek. The organization helped residents prepare resumes, learn new computer skills, and effective interviewing techniques.
From the beginning, Eastside worked hard to foster long-term collaborative relationships with other community partners, and civic leaders. For example, we work closely with Omega Psi Phi, Incorporated, Norfolk Chapter in providing a series of community workshops as a means of educating the community on key issues impacting families in crises (e.g. youth violence prevention, financial literacy, etc…). We have entered into numerous Memoranda of Understandings with organizations such as the region’s community action agency, the STOP organization in providing job readiness and emergency preparedness training. Finally, we consistently provide support to our local HBCU, Norfolk State University. Whether it is providing guidance on program design, or financial contribution in support of the student population, Eastside believes that by supporting institutions of higher learning, the community at-large is made better.
